The Legend of the Moorish Heads
In the heart of Kalsa, the ancient Arab neighborhood of Palermo, the legend of a young girl and her fatal love for a young Moor during the period of Arab domination still resounds. This beautiful girl spent her time tending to the flowers on her balcony, until one day she caught the eye of a Moor who passed by the street. Impressed by her beauty, the man immediately declared his love to her. The girl, surprised but flattered, fell in love in turn
.The story took a tragic turn when the girl discovered that her beloved Moro was already married and the father of two children and that he would soon return to his family in the East. Feeling betrayed and unable to bear the separation, she waited until night fell and, in a gesture of desperate love, killed the Moor in
his sleep.Determined to keep her beloved with her forever, the young woman cut off the dark brown's head and transformed it into a pot, in which she planted fragrant basil. He placed this macabre but charming vase on the balcony to show his undying love. The view of the plant, flourishing thanks to the tears shed every morning, aroused the envy of the inhabitants of the neighborhood, who, not wanting to be outdone, began to commission earthenware pots in the shape of a dark brown's head. Thus, a love story became a symbol of tradition and beauty in Sicilian homes, perpetuating the memory of a love as passionate as
it was tragic.
